Needless to say it’s been a tough week for Dave Mustaine. First comes word that the body of his mother-in-law was found – article here. Yesterday he lost his guitarist Chris Broderick and today he lost his drummer Shawn Drover. This kind of turmoil is nothing new. The roster of former Megadeth members is becoming a long one. This might actually be refreshing because the band, much like its leader has grown old and dare I say, stale? The albums over the years have become o.k. No more, no less. Most older fans will always point to Rust In Peace as the pinnacle of their career, however the following couple of albums were really not that bad either. I’m talking about Countdown to Extinction, Youthanasia and Cryptic Writings. The next album was titled Risk, which is certainly what you did with your money when you bought this cd. I wasn’t too crazy about this, the only salvagable song was a mid tempo song called “Breadline” which was really tailor made for big radio airplay and the album strangely enough went “Gold”. It would be the last album to do so. Cryptic Writings would be the last platinum album. I really shouldn’t bring up those metrics because those are false yard markers for people who really love music and have a good ear. Megadeth seems to have survived a lot over the years, from alcohol, drug abuse, massive line up changes and through it all Dave powers through. I can’t help but think one of the problems here may have been Dave’s commitment to his religion. However, that is just speculation, I’m sure in the next few weeks we’ll start hearing the reasons why Drover and Broderick have left the band. An article today in Blabbermouth features Glenn Drover, Shawn’s brother, who was in the band before Broderick replaced him. Glenn for some strange reason was quoted as “I will never rejoin Megadeth”. I’m pretty sure no one has been asking him. I’m hoping a new lineup with fresh talent will be enough to ressurect a band that I have followed over the years.
